To Knowledge

You taught me far too many things,
Filling my singing void
With signs and sounds untill [sic] the kings
Creative could not bide.

Before you came I knew the speech
Of mountains, I could pray
With stone and water. O foul leech
That sucks truth's blood away!
The dark mysterious blind of Earth
You drew and I could see
Only the walls of life, the girth
Of one ill-fruited tree.

You taught me how to steer by night
Unstarred and port no lie - 
But my first dream had wings of light,
And cherub witchery

You said: This is the only way
Of truth. And the fool in me
Buried God's lantern in dark clay
That an angel might not see
