Lilacs in the City
There are lilacs in the city I saw them looking over Black walls like pretty Nuns of an enclosed Order Curious to know How the earth-wheels go. I said to them: close down Your eye-lids on the town And do not heed The streeted ghosts of speed And do not imagine that God is excited at The wonder machines For Death will reap them all But for you the eternal queens Blow kisses. Do not look beyond your wall.
