Patrick Kavanagh

I Came to Town

I said I'd break out
And leave the rut
To the lout
And the slut
And the no-good doers.
I said I would break
And the broadway take:
I did,
But I stumbled
And headwise tumbled
In a hole where workmen were mending sewers.
You would say
By the way
Of my words. I gas
Idly, make play
To please me as
Wise men have done in a sometime age.
But stay friends, stay!
The rut that I left was fringed with g[]
The sewers move down in a dead dela[y]
Oh the sunlight of the unwritten gaze!
