Patrick Kavanagh

Dictator’s Geneology [sic]

My fathers strung for me
No geneologic rosary
Beads of hypnotic power -
I am, as Napoleon said, my own ancestors.

My fathers licked the crumbs
Of existence and their thumbs
Profanely in the church
Which left them in the lurch -
I am, as Napoleon said, my own ancestors.

My fathers waved too wide
The flag of family pride,
When a sword cried
So fierce, so fierce
For hearts to pierce
And was denied -
I am, as Napoleon said, my own ancestors.
